Jack Holladay, Founder of the Holladay IOL Consultant, Passed Away on April 16th, 2023

Jack Holladay created the Brightness Acuity Tester and developed software such as Holladay IOL Consultant and Refractive Surgery Consultant that are utilized globally by ophthalmologists. Additionally, he served on editorial boards of several ophthalmology journals while authoring more than 30 book chapters.

His private practice, Holladay LASIK Institute, provides comprehensive vision correction procedures including LASIK and PRK. They specialize in treating nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism and presbyopia.

Early Life and Education

Personal details Holladay enjoys spending time with his children Taylor and Courtney. Additionally, he coaches and manages his daughter’s softball team where he has won multiple championships; additionally he served on the Booster Club Board at Bellaire High School.

Furthermore, Dr. Chung has made significant contributions to refractive surgery through writing and lecturing extensively in this field. He is the author of five books, 30 book chapters and hundreds of scientific articles; additionally serving on multiple editorial and medical advisory boards.

Jack leaves behind Lora, his sons Jay and Spencer as well as many loving family members and friends to mourn his death. A Marine Corps honor guard met Jack’s casket upon its arrival to Charleston International Airport in South Carolina.

Professional Career

Holladay was an ardent teacher and writer, teaching both at North Carolina State University and Texas A&M University. Additionally, he published the popular biography American Hipster: Jack Kerouac’s Friend Herbert Huncke which received much acclaim and admiration.

He holds the clinical professorship in Ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine, is author or editor of over five textbooks, 30 book chapters and hundreds of scientific articles to his credit and has lectured worldwide as well as serving on many editorial, medical and scientific advisory boards.

He has participated in 12 FDA investigations for approval of laser and refractive surgery devices, and currently sits on four journals dedicated to refractive and cataract surgery.

Achievement and Honors

Fox Company of the 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion provided an appropriate tribute, providing Holladay with an appropriate funeral detail attended by more than 100 family and friends – as well as members of Today’s Raiders (an enduring spec-ops community that directly connects to WWII Marine raiders) were in attendance.

Jack Holladay has made significant strides toward furthering vision correction surgery through his research and teaching efforts, serving on various editorial and medical advisory boards.

Holladay also contributes his time and expertise in charitable efforts, serving as a coach and mentor for youth sports programs in Rock Hill area and is part of York Commission for Technical Education.

Personal Life

Jack Holladay was an incredible man with a brilliant mind and generous spirit, who generously served his community through service as both youth leader in church and basketball coach, volunteering his time to serve on the Boys & Girls Club of York County board, representing Comporium Communications on York Technical College Area Commission committee, among many other roles.

Holladay made numerous achievements throughout his life. These included inventing and creating software programs like IOL Consultant and Refractive Surgery Consultant that are used globally by eye surgeons to restore patients’ vision following cataract removal or improve results following refractive surgeries such as LASIK. He published extensively and made multiple presentations.

Jack was blessed to share his life with two sons, Jay and Spencer, whom will both rely upon him deeply for support and love. Friends and colleagues will remember him fondly for his kindness, humility, and integrity.

Jack Holladay reportedly owned over $1.13 million dollars as of April 16th 2023 according to his Form 4 filing. This included 1,200 units of Cal-Maine Foods stock worth more than $491,526, valued at over 4.915 Million Dollars when traded.

His greatest source of satisfaction in life lies within the context of family. With Lora as his partner and two children (Taylor and Courtney), as well as their respective spouses – Taylor is their oldest and Courtney their youngest – they share an unbreakable bond that has endured the test of time.
