Andris is a professional martial artist and instructor currently residing in the United States.

World champion in jiu jitsu, Andris has a wealth of knowledge to impart on his students. Drawing upon his own experiences in martial arts, he has tailored his instruction into an organized curriculum suitable for both novices and aspiring competitors alike.

Early Life and Education

John Andris is a German journalist who has achieved numerous honors throughout his career. He was named both Medill fellow at Northwestern University and Regents-Alumni scholar at the University of Michigan.

He has earned more than 40 journalism awards and is a member of both the American Society of News Editors and National Headliner Club.

He was a graduate of Grosse Pointe South High School and active member in both the Grosse Pointe Jaycees and Cornerstone Schools. Surviving him are his wife Evelyn and daughter Cheryl; along with grandchildren Dustin, Aaron, Rachel and Theodore; brother Lester and sister-in-law Barbara are grieving his passing as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Professional Career

John Andris is a professional martial artist who earned his black belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu. He’s renowned for his creative and exciting open guard game, which he learned under Andre Galvao’s guidance.

Throughout his professional career, Andris has participated in the World No-Gi Championship three times; winning three matches and losing one.

He has also participated in multiple other competitions. Currently, he’s competing in Fight to Win Pro and will face off against Andris Brunovskis on April 21.

He is also the music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and has conducted many performances, renowned for his ability to connect with audiences.

John Andris has earned the respect and admiration of many throughout his life. In recognition of his many accomplishments, John has received numerous honors and awards.

He graduated in 1961 from Beardstown High School and worked at Bohn Aluminum in Beardstown for 25 years until it closed. Subsequently, he began detailing cars at Jennings in Beardstown before ending his career at the Illinois Department of Corrections in Mt Sterling, IL.

He was an enthusiastic race car driver and owned several Corvettes. In his free time he enjoyed reading books, playing board games, and spending quality time with his family.

Andris is an acclaimed martial artist in the jiu jitsu community, renowned for his ability to structure classes so students can build upon each others strengths and hone their own skills through individual preferences. As one of UFC’s most creative teachers, Andris always seeks ways to enhance the sport by developing new techniques.

John Andris was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather when not in the spotlight. He cherished his family and enjoyed traveling and fishing with them.

He was also a successful businessman, serving as CEO of Arrow Uniform. Additionally, his passion for land conservation saw him sit on several boards.

His employees became his second family. He enjoyed sailing, golfing and traveling abroad with them.

He was a graduate of Grosse Pointe South High School and earned his bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University. Subsequently, he earned his master’s from Stanford University.
