Unfortunately, Livy’s education was interrupted due to illness such as tuberculosis or Pott’s disease and had to be temporarily suspended during treatment.

As her health improved, she married Sam. Unfortunately, between being a wife and mother to Clara and Jean as well as managing Mark Twain’s business affairs led to financial ruin for them and near bankruptcy for Clemens’ publishing company.
