Pendant lights with a nostalgic flair
The rustic lighting and the maritime pendant lights go hand in hand in the creations of Danish design studios Space Copenhagen & tradition. These are also the characteristics of the fire.
When designing the Copenhagen pendant lamp, Space Copenhagen implemented and modernized the shape of old-fashioned street lamps that once illuminated the pier in the Danish capital.
The design studio produces lights made of painted metal. They are hung up using one of the cords.
“The starting point was to create a design that would allow us to use different metals. From a purely sculptural point of view, it should be right and a monochrome finish should emerge. Depending on the purpose and available space, the luminaire can achieve both, ”says founding partner Peter Bundgaard Rützou.
The lamp is directed downwards and emits light through a large opening on the underside of the lampshade.
“The pendant is widest in the middle and thinner at the top and bottom to ensure the lamp has substantial body and always protects you from direct light,” said co-founder Signe Bindslev Henriksen.
The lights are available in three sizes and five matt colors. The two smaller designs are made of steel and the larger lamp is made of aluminum.
The Copenhagen trailer will be presented next week at both the imm in Cologne and the Maison & Objet in Paris.
This is the second collaboration between Space Copenhagen & tradition. After the success of the Fly Lounge series, the two design studios create new, elegant pendant lights.
“We are very excited to be working with Space Copenhagen again,” says Martin Kornbek Hansen, & tradition’s brand manager. “They have an extraordinary attention to detail and surface structure and a unique way of combining the classic with the modern.”
A lamp of contrasts is the Copenhagen pendant, which combines the maritime style and the industrial style. Its matt lacquered metal lampshade diffuses the light in a subtle and spectacular way.
“Over the years we have produced various bespoke lighting solutions for our interior projects,” says Signe Bindslev Henriksen from Space Copenhagen. “The biggest challenge in designing the Copenhagen trailer was to meet our own expectations in terms of both sculptural and functional aspects.”
Space Copenhagen originally designed a version of the pendants, then it was expanded into a series in three sizes: 200 millimeters, 350 millimeters and 600 millimeters in diameter, as well as in five matt colors: red, moss green, slate gray, black and white.
With these lights, the designers’ creativity and attention to detail are very evident. Their collaboration is also characterized by the years of experience of the interior designers at Space Copenhagen. Incidentally, even the direction of the light was carefully planned from the start. The light directed downwards spreads out in all directions, while diffuse light is directed upwards.
