Thomas Lemann is a Swiss billionaire with substantial investments across a wide variety of companies and controls condiment maker Heinz alongside Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway.

Monte Lemann’s father was an esteemed New Orleans attorney who played an influential role in modernizing Louisiana law, supporting good government initiatives, and advocating legal aid services. The LaRC currently houses Monte’s papers.

Early Life and Education

Thomas Lemann had an insatiable curiosity that led him to master all facets of many subjects, from trusts and estates law to classical Greek poetry recitation and even spidery penmanship. With this drive came an overwhelming desire to expand his knowledge. While Thomas excelled in trusts and estates law, art, history, live oak trees and classical Greek poets – he even posted YouTube videos reciting classic Greek verse.

1964 marked a turning point in both his legal career and passion for collecting art. On one hand, it saw the conclusion of his work on the Louisiana Trust Code, an iconic achievement in United States inheritance and tax law. On another front, it marked his passion for collecting contemporary art at its peak.

He was married twice: first to Barbara Mann London who died in 1999 and later Sheila Bosworth whom he survived with. They had two children together – Nicholas from New York City and Nancy of Chevy Chase Maryland as well as six grandchildren between them.
