John Sammons is a paramedic/field training officer with Wake County EMS. He has worked in the field for over 10 years.

Early Life and Education

Sammons’s father was a free African American, and his mother was a former slave. He grew up in a large family and grew up with the values of faith, hard work, honesty and loyalty.

His education included a high school degree, two years in college and a master’s degree. He worked for the Sioux City sign painting companies Arthur Loft and C W Ashley.

He was an early California Impressionist and is best known for his representational landscapes and coastal scenes. He painted in both pastels and oils.

He was a member of numerous art organizations. He also was involved in civic clubs and public service. He joined the Temple School Board and was president of the Temple City Commission. He enjoyed his life in Temple, Texas and his family.

He is also a member of the Association for the Study of Blackness and a past president of the International Society for African American History.
