Benjamin Griswold

Benjamin Griswold, MD, Founder of Kiplin Capital LLC

Benjamin Griswold has been in business for more than 50 years. Currently he holds the role of Chairman for Brown Advisory Funds and founded Kiplin Capital LLC; additionally he sits on 8 other board of director roles.

Outside his career, he takes great pleasure in spending time with his family. He enjoys coaching various forms of sport, MacGyvering anything that needs fixing, and taking camping trips in Michigan with them.

Early Life and Education

Ben was an admirable Marine, loving father, dedicated husband, and the best brother I could ask for. Through three cancer diagnoses, aggressive treatments, and long absences from home, Ben maintained an upbeat outlook by pushing himself to conquer one more mountain each day.

Ben was an esteemed graduate of Yale Divinity School’s Class of 1841, working hard towards his goals while serving on various civic and educational boards – even helping finance its construction – including helping finance USS Monitor’s construction.

As a trustee of Princeton University, Griswold recently donated an extensive sum to endow its Griswold Center for Economic Policy Studies – supporting research in economic policy while also encouraging dialogue among experts from academia, business and government – named in honor of his father (Class of 1933 graduate).

Professional Career

Since graduating from UW-Eau Claire, Griswold has worked in corporate finance. After starting his own company, he served as corporate treasurer. Additionally, he serves on several business and civic/educational organizations’ boards of directors; serving as board chair of Eau Claire Confluence Arts Inc and UW-Eau Claire Foundation among them.

He currently serves as non-executive chairman of Brown Investment Advisory & Trust Company as well as being chairman of Kiplin Capital LLC he founded. In addition, he has held board membership at Stanley Black & Decker Inc, Flowers Foods Inc, The Baltimore Life Companies and W.P. Carey & Co.

Since 1999, Mr. Johnson and his family have been strong supporters of Princeton, serving as campaign co-chair for Baltimore region as well as on regional alumni schools committee. Most recently they made a gift to endow Griswold Center for Economic Policy Studies.

Achievement and Honors

On the night prior to Commencement and Doctor of Medicine Academic Hooding Ceremony for Class 2023, nearly 110 students were honored for their achievements during an Honors Reception held the night before Commencement and Hooding Ceremony. Students received scholarships, major grants and service-oriented awards.

Griswold has long been involved in both his local community and financial industry, serving on multiple boards and foundations. These include serving on the UW-Eau Claire Foundation board as a member and chairing it as well as chairing Wisconsin Credit Union League board meetings.

Griswold has made numerous generous donations to Princeton University, including an endowment gift to its Center for Economic Policy Studies. This center supports research on topics including job loss and declining economic security for workers; occupational licensing’s effect; China’s financial markets. He has also served on its Bendheim Center for Finance advisory board as well as being an Annual Giving special gifts solicitor.

Personal Life

Ben faced his illness with incredible resolve and resilience, even in the face of repeated setbacks. Even following a recurrence of stage-4 follicular non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2017 and treatment-related acute myeloid leukemia less than one year later, he maintained infectious optimism, unwavering appreciation for those who supported him, and unflinching commitment to ensure a prosperous future for his family.

He currently serves on the boards of trustees emeritus of Johns Hopkins University and Stanley Black & Decker Inc, Flowers Foods, and Signal Hill Capital Group LLC.

He and his wife have also given generous gifts to Princeton University, including endowing the Griswold Center for Economic Policy Studies – named in memory of their late father Griswold.

Net Worth

The wealth of the Griswold family comes from industrial and merchant pursuits in 19th-century New York. John Augustus made a fortune in iron business; also financing on his own expense the USS Monitor which defeated HMS Virginia during American Civil War.

He serves as chairman of Brown Advisory, having previously held that position at Deutsche Bank Securities. Prior to that he held director positions with Stanley Black & Decker Inc, The Baltimore Life Companies, Flowers Foods and Signal Hill Capital Group LLC – among others. Furthermore, Griswold serves on Johns Hopkins University’s Carey Business School advisory boards as well as Peabody Conservatory advisory boards.

He has been an extremely generous donor to Princeton, serving on the Board of the Bendheim Center for Finance and as Regional Gift Solicitor in its Annual Giving Campaign. His gift to endow the Griswold Center for Economic Policy Studies was his largest so far.
