Car Rental Tips & Tricks for Lanzarote / Canary Islands

We were in Lanzarote for a few days and were pleasantly surprised by the rental cars on the island: If you book the right offer, you usually get a perfect car. However, as with all holiday rental cars, there are a few things to consider.

Choose a rental company directly in the airport terminal!

We have explicitly recommended booking a rental car via Check24 for years. Here is the best price comparison of all offers. In addition, after “landlords in the terminal“ filter: This means that you don’t have to take a shuttle bus to a rental company further away from the airport. The largest and well-known rental companies are in the terminal anyway. In autumn of this year we booked with “AutoReisen” via Check24 – for two days (i.e. 48 hours) we paid around EUR 130 for one of the smallest classes. However, it is often much cheaper.

Book the right class

If you are traveling as a couple, for example, there is nothing to consider: you should always book one of the 3 smallest classes, larger models are rather rare on the Canary Islands anyway and you might pay more without really getting more. If you drive a lot, you can book a diesel guarantee if you wish. Automatic switching can also be guaranteed. It’s always luck which car you end up with. We were very happy with our Hyundai Kona. Ours and other vehicles of fellow travelers (we had tested the rental companies AutoReisen and Cicar) were each in above-average good and clean condition!

Our tips for an optimal booking with Check24

Always fully comprehensive & never book directly with the landlord

It is not a good idea to do a price comparison at Check24 and then book directly with the provider (e.g. Tuicars, Europcar, AutoReisen, Cicar): only if you book through Check24 is there always fully comprehensive insurance without a deductible – if you tick the appropriate box puts. If you book directly with a tour operator or directly with a Spanish holiday rental car provider, there is often an attempt to impose one or more insurance companies on site. Our tip: If you book a rental car with fully comprehensive insurance at Check24, you also get a PDF to print out, on which it is already pre-printed in the local language that you have already booked all insurance and you do not want to book additional, unnecessary insurance!

On site: The trick for faster pick-up…

Almost all Spanish airports have a similar structure for picking up rental cars: All rental car counters are directly accessible from the baggage claim hall. With tourist flights, however, long queues quickly form here – you can happily queue there for an hour. The trick: The rental car counters are almost always also accessible from the other side, i.e. from outside the baggage carousel. So one traveler should wait alone for the luggage while the other already goes outside and just queues up from the other side!

Here we don’t queue on the side of the baggage carousel, we exit the security area and queue on the other side of the counters!

Pick up and drop off in Lanzarote / Arrecife

Picking up and dropping off a rental car at Arrecife Airport is extremely simple and straightforward. There is a large parking garage for all rental cars, where you can load, unload and take over the car with plenty of space. You get the key at the counter in the terminal, the car is then usually in the parking garage directly opposite, sometimes the vehicles are also parked in the parking lot outside (about 100 meters to the right from the terminal). To return a rental car at Arrecife Airport, simply follow the “Rental Car” or “Car Return” signs upon arrival. We recommend not allowing too much time: the key is usually handed in directly in the car park and it is only a few steps to the check-in counters!
