Dan Clivner

Dan Clivner serves as both managing partner and global co-leader of Sidley Austin’s mergers & acquisitions (M&A) and private equity group, representing domestic and international private equity, corporate, and public clients in complex transactions.

Previous to joining Siris Capital in 1988 and helping establish their Tokyo office with Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP in 1990, Mr. Smith began at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett where he advised clients such as Siris Capital, Zelnick Media and CBS Corporation in media, entertainment and retailing deals.

Early Life and Education

Past experience includes serving as training manager at Mountain West AIDS Education and Training Center in Washington State as well as consultant work for Asociacion Civil IMPACTA Salud y Educacion, one of the largest HIV/AIDS NGO in Lima Peru. He has also participated on multiple task forces for conducting HIV vaccine trials across the US.

Clivner has quickly emerged as a leader within his law firms and an advocate for diversity issues. He serves on Sidley Austin LLP’s executive committee and as managing partner of their Los Angeles offices; additionally, he acts as global co-leader of their mergers and acquisitions practice.

Beginning his career at Simpson Thacher’s Tokyo office, Mr. Morley relocated to Los Angeles in 1996 where he advised Seagram Company and NBC Universal (formerly Universal Studios) on numerous television, theme park, motion picture, music acquisition/disposition/financing transactions as well as financing arrangements. Furthermore, Mr. Morley has represented CBS Corporation, Siris Capital Group LLC and Zelnick Media Capital on entertainment retailing transactions.

He serves on the board and was former chairman of Public Counsel, one of the nation’s premier pro bono law firms, as well as being a director at APLA Healthcare.

Dan is a partner at Sidley Austin LLP’s Global M&A and Private Equity Group, serving both as co-leader of their Los Angeles office and member of their Executive Committee. Dan regularly advises boards, management, special committees and investors in domestic and international transactions; in addition to this role he served as Chairman of Board and leader of capital campaign for Public Counsel – one of the nation’s leading pro bono public interest law firms – before being selected to their “Top 100 Lawyers” list from 2022-2023 while being named Champion of Diversity by Los Angeles Business Journal while being named to Minority Corporate Counsel Association’s 2022 “Rainmaker” list in 2023!

Baruch College held a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the grand opening of Clivner-Field Plaza on East 25th Street, marking its debut as a welcome, open green space for campus community and nearby residents.

Personal Life

Dan is survived by his husband of 29 years, Dan Clivner of Los Angeles; two sons Josh and Matt of New York City; his sister Kathy Cochran of Southern Pines NC and Jupiter FL as well as mother-in-law Mira Clivner from Hollis Hills NY. In addition to these relationships he served on Baruch College’s Executive Committee while being an honorary trustee as well as past Chairman for Public Counsel – one of America’s premier pro bono law firms and on its Board as well as being on its Board and Executive Committee as well as being on its executive Committee of AIDS Project LA.
