Thomas Starnes, 76, of Buncombe County, GA, Passed Away This Morning

Thomas Starnes had been suffering from illness for some time and passed away this morning at 1:20 at his home in Buncombe County at his own residence. Born and bred here, Starnes was an outspoken supporter of unionize workers.

George and Starnes both made motions to dismiss, however the District Court denied their motions as they failed to demonstrate why their evidence should be disallowed by meeting their burden of proof that such evidence should not be admissible.

Early Life and Education

Thomas Starnes was born in Cartersville Georgia to Lt. Colonel Albert Starnes and Faye Starnes on June 12, 1946.

He earned both a law degree from Yale and his undergraduate diploma from College of the Holy Cross. Following law school graduation, he went on to work at several large firms before earning an excellent reputation as a litigator.

His key opinions included District of Columbia v. Heller, which established the right to own firearms; and contributed to Justice Scalia’s opinion in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission which overturned decades of campaign finance law precedent. He enjoyed great love from his family and friends throughout his life.

Professional Career

At Motorola in Austin, Starnes worked in their semiconductor operations. There he assisted in marketing their embedded microprocessor (MPU), microcontroller, and digital signal processor chip technology as part of engineering workstations, PCs, and servers. This experience gave him a foundation from which he could later understand broader facets of electronics industry as an analyst and advisor.

Starnes served as Indiana University in Bloomington’s goalkeeping coach under first-year head coach Erwin Van Bennekom from 2015 to 2016. In this capacity he was responsible for training goalkeepers, defensive set pieces, student athlete academic progress and community projects and charities such as Rotaract Club of Indianapolis membership and trustee at The Indianapolis Museum of Art board trusteeship.

Achievement and Honors

Professor Starnes received his Bachelor’s in Economics from Vanderbilt and, following military and government service in Europe, returned to the United States where he earned an M.A. in German from Louisiana State University as well as his PhD from the University of Illinois – where he also was both Graduate Fellow and Instructor.

Wave was an active member of the American Association of University Women, an organization dedicated to furthering equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and philanthropy. She and Tom also played key roles in supporting Cape Henlopen Food Basket which provides emergency food assistance to local families in times of emergency.

She leaves behind her loving husband of 62 years, Thomas Cowan Starnes; sons Victoria (John Ewald) Starnes and Thomas (Barbara Davis) Starnes; daughter-in-law Kathy Gomez-Starnes; grandchildren Keott Gomez-Starnes, Rachel Sorrentino Jacob Ewald and Hannah VanMeter as well as numerous loving nieces, nephews and cousins in the Todd, Trout and Starnes families.

Personal Life

He was married to Lynn Starnes and they shared two children and five grandchildren. He attended Canton Road Church of God located at 14 Simpson Cir NE Cartersville GA where he belonged. He leaves behind his wife as well as brothers and sisters-in-law.

He had strong faith in Christianity, never faltering from his principles even when faced with great difficulty. He remained an enthusiastic supporter of the Union, ready and willing to assist it however possible.

Tom participated actively in ENC’s inaugural intercollegiate debate team and also served as editor of its student newspaper, The Eagle. Soon after graduating in 1954, he married Wave and they went on to start their lives together as husband and wife; Wave went on to become a teacher while Tom continued his studies at Nazarene Seminary.
